Hemorrhoid Treatments - How to Ease Hemorrhoid Pain

!±8± Hemorrhoid Treatments - How to Ease Hemorrhoid Pain

People who suffer from hemorrhoids go through a lot of discomfort and embarrassment, and some even find it hard to talk about it. This should not make you live with it but it is good for you to look for a solution once and for all to end your misery. One of the most common treatments of getting rid of hemorrhoids is by using ointments and creams.

These creams are usually applied on the affected area of the anus so the blood vessels and the tissue relax and reduce the chances of getting a rupture. This has helped several people get relief of hemorrhoids but it is not a permanent solution.

There is another form of treatment known as anal suppositories. It is used for treating internal hemorrhoids by inserting it inside the anal in order to provide moisture that has a lubrication effect which will help in reducing the possibility of a rapture do the blood vessels during healing. This one also has also helped in relieving the effect of hemorrhoids but is only a temporary solution.

The use of prescription pills in another way of dealing with hemorrhoids. The pills tighten the blood vessels during the healing process so as to reduce swelling and blood pressure. This will help to ease the pain but the pills are known to have either side effect that may prove to be a healthy hazard. It is important that you consult with a doctor before trying them out.

Another method is the strangulation method or surgery. These are medical procedures that are used in a case of severe hemorrhoids. The surgical procedure involves removing the hemorrhoids by that is cutting off the infected tissue. Strangulation is done by tying an elastic band at the bottom of the hemorrhoid so as to prevent blood supply to the tissue. The tissue will eventually die and be expelled from the body during a normal bowel movement. This method gets rid of hemorrhoids fast but is quite expensive.

There is a natural treatment that you can use at the comfort of your home which involves mixing certain plant products and other natural ingredients. One of the commonly used natural plants is the witch hazel the components in the plant help reduce hemorrhoids by simply soaking it in the infected area for a while. As long as you know the procedures involved there are many methods of making preparing natural treatment for hemorrhoids.

Ice placing is another method that provides relief and reduces swelling. You only place an ice pack on the infected area which will cool the tissue causing immediate relief. Using a Vicks Vapor Rub is also used by applying it directly to the hemorrhoids in which you will feel a burning sensation which will later reduce and cool the inflamed area. These methods do not get rid of hemorrhoids completely; therefore if you are looking for a permanent solution, you should improve your life style by eating the right kinds of food and in the right amounts.

How to Cure a Toe Nail Fungus

!±8± How to Cure a Toe Nail Fungus

If you get a nail fungus, it is just tough to get rid of. Medication really doesn't penetrate the toenail and a lot of times you end up spreading it to your other toes. When you cut your toenails, either cut the one with the fungus last or wash the clippers in alcohol between cutting each of the toenails to clean off any fungus. See, if you cut a toenail with fungus on it, the fungus can get stuck on the clippers. Then when you go to cut another toenail, you get the fungus on another toe. So don't do that, that's rule #1. You also don't want to clean the dirt out from under the nails because there is a good possibility of cross contamination, just like with the clippers. If you do that, clean whatever you are using with alcohol.

Fungus looks like a discoloring or a thickening of the nail. There normally isn't any pain involved but it just looks ugly. If it gets too bad, the nail could fall off because the fungus sort of detaches it from the nail bed.

Going to the podiatrist, the doctor may try to cut the nail short enough to get rid of the fungus, just kind of dig it out. There are a few commercially available antifungals that can be prescribed but, really, they just don't work all that well. I've made some compounds with iodine, terbinafine, an antifungal tablet, and DMSO. Honestly, I haven't seen any prescription product work really well, or any over the counter antifungals either.

I've recommended this treatment a couple times since reading about it on the internet. My customers, the ones who followed it, say that it works. So what you need to do is go to the grocery store and buy a couple bags of Epsom salts, toenail clippers, and a nail file. Cut the infected nail as short as possible and then file it down, on the top of the nail, making it thin over the fungus. Make sure you don't go too deep when you file, if you do, it hurts.

A minimum of once a day, two is better, and three is even better, soak your toes in hot water with a good amount of Epsom salts, maybe ½ cup or something in a shallow pan. The water needs to be as hot as you can tolerate. Soak them for at least 20 minutes, 30 is better. So, try for three times a day for 30 minutes in hot water. To make it even better, just pour that Epsom salt right on the toenail. Get as much touching that infected toe as possible, bury it if you have to.

If you sit at a desk all day or do something where you can just soak your feet all day, that's fine. Keep them in the water as often as possible and just keep heating the water in the microwave or adding hot water. Try putting a towel under one end of the pan so that the water is deeper towards the toes and your heal is out of the water. It's not necessary to do this but soaking the heal of your foot for a long time will have the tendency to soften the skin of your heal and that could cause pain when you walk, you want your heal to be tough.

When doing this treatment, you want to keep your feet out of shoes and socks as much as possible. The fungus grows in a warm, moist environment so avoid that situation. Wear sandals as much as you can and keep your toes dry between treatments. Try to keep your feet out of shoes, put them on at the last minute before work, take them off at lunch, take them off while driving, things like that until the fungus is gone.

After you are done soaking, you don't have to throw away the water with the Epsom salts in it. You can use the same water for a few days, maybe even a week. Just add some water as it evaporates.

You also want to file that nail down just about every day. You want there to be as little room or as thin a nail possible between the water and the fungus. That just makes it easier for the Epsom salts to do their work. So file, cut, file, cut, keep it short and thin.

I'm not going to tell you that this is going to take care of the fungus overnight, or even in a week. This is a tough one, this nail fungus. It can take over a month for this to work. Another thing that you may want to try is putting Vicks Vapor rub on your toes in the morning after your soak and before bed. Some people say that the Vicks prevents the fungus from growing but I don't really have any proof either way on that one.

Natural Remedies For Babies and Toddlers

!±8± Natural Remedies For Babies and Toddlers

Being a nurse I have had the common habit of having 'every' drug in the cupboard for health problems or emergencies! However, in the last few years I've become aware of alternate ways of dealing with symptoms and problems and I'm now more likely to 'think outside the square' and search for a 'natural' alternative such as chiropractic, Cranio-sacral therapy, herbal, Bach flowers, food intolerances, vitamins and minerals rather than an over the counter drug.

I love the nature of my work and the individual challenge that each baby presents to me. While common issues and problems appear consistently in general age/ developmental stages, I still look at each baby in as an individual and make sure that I am dealing with a routine or strategy issue and not a health problem. Sometimes parents want me to solve the sleeping issue when there is a genuine medical reason for the problem but more often the child presents with a history of 'survival' strategies that mum and dad put in place and we need to work on a new plan that "gives mum and dad their life back". Let's look at some common issues and how we can deal with them.

Pain, Reflux, Colic, Bedwetting.
I am often referring the generally unsettled, reflux, colicky babies, babies who protest at floor play, babies unable to hold their head up independently and older children who are bed-wetter's to a paediatric chiropractor for spinal checks. Remember that the spine channels the nerves around the body to the organs, so it makes sense that if the spine is out of alignment (from the birth process, a fall or physical trauma) that there may be a nerve being pinched that is causing pain or unwelcome sensations in the body (hence the reflux, colic, headache, sore neck, unstable bladder etc).

This group also respond well to homeopathic remedies such as Brauer's 'colic relief' and 'stomach calm'.

Unexplained night time alertness and food reactions.
Then there is the increasing number of children who are in a fantastic, organized daily routine, eating and playing well, consistent parenting and communication but they are waking up in the middle of the night, looking and acting like they have had 12 hours sleep! Or the children with eczema, skin rashes and other reactions after eating.

I refer all of these children to an immunologist for allergy testing. While this may seem extreme or unusual, with the changes to our food sources and the colouring, preservatives and additives in our foods a lot of our children are not coping. Unfortunately the usual treatment for eczema is a prescription cream and bucket loads of expensive lotions for during and after the bath. But doesn't it make sense to look for the source of the eczema or the possible diet related night waking rather than waiting for the child to 'grow out of it' or mum and dad to go insane and send the child off to boarding school! Many children are reportedly reacting to the preservatives in the bread they are eating or the salicylates, amines and yeast etc even in the fruits, vegetables and salads they are eating or not receiving the right amounts of vitamins or minerals in their diet. Yes they are healthy foods!

Mums, if you are feeling that your body isn't feeling 'normal' or you suspect that you may be going through early menopause due to your symptoms, have your hormone levels checked and do some research.

Anxious, stressed or emotional babies.
For the babies who are anxious and appear stressed or have unusual separation anxiety (remembering that children reflect the parent's emotions) I refer mothers and babies to a Cranio-sacral therapist or a homeopath. Cranio-sacral therapy is a gentle light-touch therapy to align the malleable bones of the cranium (skull) with the rest of the spine down to the sacrum and pelvis. This therapy encourages the body's natural healing mechanisms to improve the function of the central nervous system and deepen the sense of relaxation.

A homeopath offers Bach flower remedies to counteract your symptoms and help your health return to a state of balance. Looking at the cause of your ill health rather than just treating the symptoms.

Tip:

Handy Natural 'alternatives' that I recommend

To stop a dry cough in babies and adults

For babies over three months Rub INFANT Vicks Vapour Rub generously on the soles of your babies feet and cover with socks. For children over two years and adults rub the normal Vicks Vapour Rub generously on the soles of your feet and cover with socks. Reapply when you feel it has worn off. Don't know how it works but it does. (Remember that some coughs are due to a runny nose running down the back of the throat and this is difficult to stop until the nose stops running).

Anxious, Unable to sleep, In pain, Injured??
Rescue Remedy is a 'Bach Flower' homeopathic preparation widely used as a spray or a dropper bottle and applied under the tongue or rubbed on the wrist. Use on any age. It works by instantly relaxing the nerves and calming the mind. No Maximum doses, use as needed. I keep a spray bottle in my medicine cabinet and in my handbag.

Want to keep mozquitoes away?
Listerine mouthwash! Purchase a spray bottle from the gardening section of your supermarket and pour in the Listerine straight, not diluted. Mozzies hate it apparently and it's safe to spray everywhere.

Over the Counter Cold Medications and Breastfeeding

!±8± Over the Counter Cold Medications and Breastfeeding

It can be extremely frustrating when you're breastfeeding and you have a cold! Not only do you feel extremely lousy but you can't just take any old over the counter medications to relieve your discomfort. This is because not every cold medication is safe to take while breastfeeding. In this article, we'll discuss how to choose over the counter cold medications that are safe while breastfeeding.

First of all, you should ask yourself if a non medical approach is possible. While nursing, it is typically suggested that you try the non medical approach first as these tend to be safer for baby. Some proven natural methods that may help are:

o Take a Nap.

o Take Vitamin C or Drink Plenty of Orange Juice.

o Take a Warm Bath with Vicks Vapor Rub In It.

o Use a Humidifier.

o Rest and Relax.

Second, you should do a bit of research about the medication you wish to take. This can be done by asking your physician, a pharmacy technician, or some other medical professional. Another option is to conduct some internet research. Keep in mind however that many over the counter cold medications are excreted through breast milk so that when you take a dose, so does your baby. In addition, some cold medications have also been shown to limit or impede a mother's ability to make milk. A good rule of thumb is that if a medication was safe during pregnancy then it is likely to be safe while nursing. However, always ask a professional to be extra careful.

Third, know the facts and be wise in your decision. Although natural remedies tend to be best, here are some common cold medications that are often recommended while you're breastfeeding. Tylenol Cold and Sudafed are considered safe for breastfeeding mothers, along with Beconase or Flonase nasal spray. For allergies, non sedating Sudafed and Benadryl are also considered safe for use during breast feeding, although some studies show that Benadryl can actually decrease your milk supply. Allegra is fine as well, however you should avoid long term use. One thing you should also avoid is the extended capsules or formulas. These are the ones that are meant to last all day long. They are more likely to get into the breast milk and be passed to baby, as well as stay in his or her system for a longer period of time.

Instead of risking this, simply take the regular acting medications and avoid the 9 or 12 hour kind. If you find that your cold or condition is not getting better and you are continuing to take the medication in order to find relief, you should visit your physician. Continuing to take the medication will only increase the risks to your baby, and medicines should not be taken for more than a few days with no improvement in condition.

In conclusion, breastfeeding is a wonderful thing and you shouldn't let something like a cold slow you down when it comes to giving your baby the best possible start. By utilizing the tips and ideas mentioned above, you can make the best choice for you and your nursing baby.

Vapor Rub and Toenail Fungus

!±8± Vapor Rub and Toenail Fungus

If you've heard of a vapor rub for toenail fungus, you may be envisioning holding your feet over a steaming basin while someone massages your toes, or spending relaxing time in a sauna. In fact, this home remedy for fungal nail infections is not quite so exotic. It involves the regular application of a substance that many of us met as children when we had head colds. Your mother may have smeared Vicks VapoRub on your chest, or put it in a vaporizer to help clear your breathing passages. Now, if you a fungal nail infection, you may want to apply it to your toenails.

The vapor rub and toenail fungus home remedy has a simple basis: this oily substance softens and penetrates the nail, and some ingredient (is it menthol, perhaps?) kills the fungus. Some anecdotal reports claim that this remedy works well, others claim that it does not work. Still others recommend it for children, but not for adults. It might be possible to sort all this out by remembering that topical treatments for nail fungus infection don't work too well if the treatment doesn't reach the fungus.

Children's toenails are thinner that adult's nails, so it makes sense that the vapor rub and toenail fungus remedy works better for them. Likewise, adults whose infections are not too far advanced, that is, the nail is not yet thickened by the disruptive growth of the fungus, may have better success with Vicks VapoRub. When the nail fungus infection has distorted the nail, and buried the fungus deep in a flaking crumbling shield, the Vicks probably doesn't contact the lower layers, therefore it doesn't work. In cases like this, it will be helpful to file away the thickness of the nail as much as possible to enhance penetration.

Another reason that the vapor rub and toenail fungus remedy doesn't always work could be that it is very effective against some of the types of fungus that cause nail fungus infection, but less effective, or even useless against other types. While the majority of fungal nail infections are caused by one or two specific fungi, quite a number of others infect nails less commonly. Even the clinically tested prescription drugs have not been evaluated against all of them.

There's only one way to find out if the vapor rub and toenail fungus remedy will work for you: buy some and apply it several times each day and wait for improvement. If you decide to try it, you can at least be thankful that Vicks VapoRub is inexpensive and very easy to obtain.

Home Remedies For Stretch Marks That Work Surprisingly Well

!±8± Home Remedies For Stretch Marks That Work Surprisingly Well

Stretch marks or striae distensae can appear on boys and girls, men and women, usually on the abdomen, thighs, hips, breasts, upper arms or lower back, anywhere fat is stored.

Approximately 90% of pregnant Caucasian women develop stretch marks, with women of color fairing slightly better.

Your genetics play a role, so if your mother has bad stretch marks, you probably will too; as does your skin type, stress, poor diet and sudden environmental change.

What is the cause of stretch marks?

They appear during puberty, pregnancy, the bulking up phase of bodybuilding, obesity, intense physical activity and Cushing's disease. Oral steroids and over-use of low potency topical steroid creams/ointments driven deeper into the skin when covered with plastic wrap, can also cause stretch marks.

During these critical times, increased hormones in the bloodstream prevent the dermis from forming collagen and elastin fibers.

At the very time your skin over-stretches and you need elasticity and strong underlying support most, you do not have it. Unsurprisingly the dermal layer tears, it flattens the epidermis and leaves red surface marks.

Stretch marks are actually bands of elastin broken beneath the skin. When the tears heal, the collagen fibers do not line up properly, resulting in an uneven appearance and white marks.

What it boils down to is that stretch marks are scars created by your own body to heal damage on the inside caused by over-stretched skin which is too thin.

Unfortunately stretch marks stay with you forever because the damage is in the dermis, far below the surface of the skin, and no cream on earth can undo it.

How your skin normally heals indicates what your stretch marks will look like. With time all stretch marks are less noticeable, and with treatment, even less so, but their striated appearance rarely returns to its original smooth appearance and the texture remains different to normal skin.

Although aesthetically stretch marks may bother you, they are harmless and do not require medical treatment.

How to fade stretch marks

Instead of trying expensive, painful, invasive procedures which may or may not work, with just a little diligent self-maintenance and patience your marks will fade dramatically.

The regimen we look at entails repairing your multi-layered skin from the inside with water, good nutrition and exercise; and from the outside with exfoliation, massage and oils.

All the natural, chemical free ingredients are conveniently found in your kitchen or local health store, generating the same results as expensive creams, but saving you a ton of money.

The earlier you start treatment on red scars, the faster they heal; but do not give up hope, there is still a lot you can do for older white scars.

Let us start by replenishing the inside:

Water

Drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day naturally hydrates your tissues, keeps your skin soft and elastic and helps keep collagen production at normal levels. Think of it as an internal moisturizer.

For every mug of coffee, tea or soda you drink, have an additional glass of water.

Nutrition

Eating foods rich in essential fatty acids, zinc, silica and vitamins A,C,D,E,K nourishes the body and replenishes your skin. Include oily fish, eggs, liver and lean meats, citrus fruit, tomatoes, almonds, pumpkin seeds, carrots, spinach, green cabbage, kale, Swiss Chard, turnip greens, broccoli, tomatoes, collards and low fat dairy products in your diet.

Stress, oral contraceptives and hormone therapies can deplete your body of essential nutrients vital for skin health. Good nutrition helps correct the balance.

Biochemistry/tissue salts

Calcium Fluoride, Natrium Muriaticum and Calcium Phosphate restore tone and elasticity to muscles, connective tissue and skin, and help maintain the body's water balance.

Exercise

Stretch marks look worse on flabby skin than they do on toned, firm flesh.

Working from the outside, focus on the stretch marks themselves, twice a day:

Exfoliate or dry brush the stretch mark areas.

Apply lemon juice to fade the scars.

Dry your skin.

Generously moisturize with one or more of the oils below.

Massage as vigorously as you can to increase circulation.

Moisturize generously, preferably after showering when your pores more receptively soak up the oil.

When you can, cover your oil saturated stretch marks with plastic wrap, put a hot water bottle, hot towel or heating pad on top for 20 to 30 minutes.

Remove the wrap and wipe off any excess oil to obviate stained clothes.

Use whichever oils appeal to you; there is no wrong one. Just stick to the general principles - exfoliate, moisturize and massage.

Let us look at each factor in more detail.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating and/or dry brushing removes layers of dead skin to unveil soft, fresh skin. Some marks may be difficult to reach and areas like the breasts are more sensitive, but do what you can.

Use a loofah or an exfoliator, bought or home-made -- sea salt, oatmeal, baking soda, ground coffee or apricot scrub, with a wet washcloth. Add any of them to olive oil to make a paste and then massage the stretch marks for 10 minutes in a circular motion while you are in the shower.

Or use this as your exfoliator:

5 tablespoons of scrub

1 teaspoon aloe vera gel

1/2 teaspoon vitamin E

1 teaspoon cocoa butter

Rinse off afterwards.

Apply lemon juice which helps stretch marks fade. Allow it to dry, then rinse with warm water and towel dry your skin.

A derma or skin roller helps oil penetrate more deeply. If using one, use it now before you moisturize.

Moisturize and hydrate

The more you infuse your skin with moisture the better.

Massage any natural oil into your stretch marks. What oil you use matters less than that you regularly and vigorously massage these areas, thereby improving circulation and promoting rejuvenation.

If you are pregnant and the skin of your expanding stomach feels ticklish, keep your nails short; scratching tears the dermis. Apply oil and gently rub the area with a cloth to relieve the itch.

A word of caution if you are keen to try one of the packaged remedies for stretch marks: many are laden with dangerous chemicals which should not be applied when you are pregnant and most especially not to your abdomen.

Fragrances in baby oil dry out the skin and petroleum jelly moisturizes when applied, but the skin becomes drier when you abstain, so stick to natural organic oils:

Cocoa butter

Rose hip oil

Extra virgin olive oil

Castor oil

Emu oil

Lanolin oil

Vitamin E oil

Vitamin A

Vitamin C

Vitamin K cream

Jojobo oil

Natural shea butter

Aloe vera

Let us elaborate on some of these oils. Ideal by themselves, or combine as in these recipes.

Vitamin E oil

Alpha Tocopheral in Vitamin E is an antioxidant needed to regenerate the skin by promoting the growth of cells.

Squalene, a natural antioxidant which promotes skin regeneration, enhances the effects of vitamin E.

To get your vitamin E oil, break open the capsule, discard the casing and rub the oil into the affected areas.

Mix almond oil, castor oil, avocado oil and vitamin E oil together.

Combine vitamin E oil and cocoa butter.

Make a paste of vitamin E rich oil such as olive oil or castor oil with aromatic herbs like mint, lemon grass, lavender, thyme, and massage for 20 minutes before going to sleep.

Bio Oil is great.

Essential oils

To one ounce of carrier oil (avocado, sweet almond, jojoba, grapeseed) add seven drops of lavender and a few drops of chamomile, and apply to the affected areas.

Lavender essential oil, applied directly to scars will help them fade, especially newer injuries.

Vitamin K cream

Apply Vitamin K cream topically to stretch marks, and depending on how severe they are, your skin type and activity level, you will see results in as little as 8 to 14 days.

Cocoa butter

Cocoa butter is probably the best known stretch mark home remedy and also keeps the skin soft and pliable.

1/2 cup cocoa butter

1 tablespoon wheat germ oil

1 teaspoon apricot kernel oil

1 teaspoon vitamin E oil

2 teaspoon grated beeswax

Heat the mixture until the beeswax melts. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator and apply to your stretch marks.

Some people prefer the 100% cocoa butter stick to the lotion. Quite dry when first applied, it becomes oilier as you rub it on.

Olive oil

Massage onto the stretch marks.

Warm olive oil slightly in the microwave, spread on scars and leave for 20 minutes.

Mix equal amounts of olive and coconut oil.

Rub a mixture of olive oil and lemon on the parts of your body where the stretch marks are, then apply cocoa butter immediately afterwards.

Some people find cocoa butter has no effect on them, but olive oil works well. Experiment to find what best suits your skin.

1/2 teaspoon each of cod liver oil, olive oil and aloe vera gel doubles as an anti-aging skin treatment.

Flaxseed/linseed oil

Good for any scar tissue, mix equal amounts of olive oil and flaxseed oil. You can add this to your favorite body cream if you wish.

Flaxseed oil is excellent for internal use too. Add to yogurt, shakes or salad dressing.

Castor oil

Apply castor oil to any scars including warts, moles, dark spots and wrinkles for 30 minutes a day. Combine it with rose hip seed oil, tea tree oil and vitamin E oil. Even though you apply it externally, it works as a laxative and your lymphatic system detoxifies.

Then apply some of the following cream:

200 ml unscented aqueous cream

20 ml collagen cream

10 ml olive oil

5 ml coconut oil

5 ml tea tree oil

Mix and leave in the sun for one day before you use it (more natural than microwaving). Apply at least twice a day and see an improvement after three days. Good for eczema sufferers too.

Aloe vera gel

Known for its healing and soothing properties.

1/2 cup olive oil as your base

1/4 cup aloe vera gel

Oil from 10 vitamin E capsules

Oil from 5 vitamin A capsules

Blend and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Rub into the skin until fully absorbed.

Vicks Vapor Rub

Smear Vicks onto the stretch marks.

Or combine lemon juice, aloe vera gel and Vicks, microwave for 5 seconds. Leave it on your scars for 10 minutes. Rinse it off and apply cocoa butter stick, rubbing it into the stretch marks.

Hide them

Until they have faded sufficiently, consider hiding your stretch marks with clothes, a swimsuit offering more coverage, a self-tanning cream or body makeup. Tanning itself will not help - the stretch marks are less likely to tan than surrounding skin and their appearance may actually be emphasized.

Conclusion

Be wary of promises made by those flogging stretch mark creams. No cream can truly prevent or remove stretch marks.

If you feel self-conscious about your stretch marks, take comfort in the fact that most people have them, and with the passage of time together with the above, they will barely be noticeable.

In the meantime learn to live with them. Being proud of your body, stretch marks and all, is a very appealing quality.
